One SDR is a fragile strategy

A single rep is not a program. It is a coin flip with a salary attached — and the failure is usually blamed on the wrong thing.

Here is how it usually goes. A company decides to try outbound. They hire one SDR. Six months later the experiment is declared a failure and outbound gets written off for two years.

One SDR is not a test of outbound. It is a test of one person, on one script, against one list, with no manager who has time to coach them.

Why it breaks

  • No baseline. With one rep you cannot tell whether the messaging, the list, or the person is the problem.
  • No coverage. Vacation, illness, or a bad month is a total outage in your top of funnel.
  • No coaching density. Managers create performance more than reps do, and a single rep rarely gets a real manager.
  • No comparison. Two reps working the same list surface the variable in a week. One rep hides it for a quarter.

Consistency beats talent. A small unit running the same motion every day, reviewed weekly, will out produce a single strong closer running on instinct.

What a real unit looks like

A pod. A lead plus a few reps, working one motion, inside your CRM, with KPI tracking and a weekly rhythm: coaching, pipeline review, AE feedback, one on ones.

That structure is also what protects you from turnover. When someone leaves a one person program, the program stops. When someone leaves a managed unit, the seat gets refilled from an existing talent pipeline and the motion keeps running.

Before you hire anyone

Do the math. TAM, ACV, conversion rate, sales cycle, expected meeting volume, cost per opportunity. If outbound does not pencil out at the unit level, hiring one rep to find out is the most expensive way to learn that.

Sometimes the honest answer is do not hire anyone yet. We will tell you when that is the case.
